Featured Book: The Case of The Washed-Up Corpse (Grave Sisters Mysteries: Book 1) by Tam May

Featured Book: The Case of The Washed-Up Corpse (Grave Sisters Mysteries: Book 1) by Tam May

Writing has been Tam May’s voice since the age of fourteen. She writes stories set in the past featuring sassy but sensitive women characters. Tam is the author of the Adele Gossling Mysteries, which takes place in the early 20th century and features suffragist and epistolary expert Adele Gossling whose talent for solving crimes doesn’t sit well with her town’s conventional ideas about women. She also has a new series, the Grave Sisters Mysteries, about three sisters who own a funeral home and help the county D.A. solve crimes in a 1920s small California town, set to release in 2025. In addition, she has written historical fiction about women breaking loose from the social and psychological expectations of their era. Although Tam left her heart in San Francisco, she lives in the Midwest because it’s cheaper. When she’s not writing, she’s devouring everything classic (books, films, art, music), concocting yummy plant-based dishes, and exploring her riverside town.

Featured Book: Black Velvet by Sal Casamassima

Featured Book: Black Velvet by Sal Casamassima

Sal Casamassima took early retirement from his corporate job and wandered through various pursuits such as coaching his daughter’s softball teams and amateur wine making. During his wanderings in retirement wonderland, Sal constantly annoyed his daughter by expressing his desire to write a mystery novel. In a vain attempt to stop his endless banter, she told hm to put up or shut up by taking on the NaNoWriMo challenge to complete a 50,000-word novel in the month of November. Of course, Sal failed to complete the required word count but was infected by the writing bug and trudged forward to complete his first novel.

His story and characters in his books are set in contemporary society and actual cities where the crime to be solved is grounded in reality and influenced by the societal challenges we all confront in today’s world. His main characters may have their own quirks and personality flaws but they are portrayed as real people that most of us can relate to. Sal begins writing his books without a final script or outline in mind. He has no clue how the mystery will be solved and leaves it to his protagonists to solve the case for him in real time. He is their stenographer and simply types what they are speaking or thinking.

Sal lives in sunny San Diego, the primary locale for his first novel. He takes advantage of this balmy San Diego weather and goes for aimless walks with his Minpin dog, Zuzu (who is portrayed in his books.)

Featured Book: The Witness by Jordan Standridge

Featured Book: The Witness by Jordan Standridge

“Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well-preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming, ‘WOW—what a ride!’” ~Hunter S. Thompson

This has been a quote and sentiment I’ve lived by for nearly three decades now. And to complement it, my lifelong core belief is simple: “How is one to know what they are good at, what they like or don’t like, or what they can do, if they never try and do it?” So I go out and do it.

Having these two main thoughts taking up space in my head has led me on many interesting paths all across North America from central Mexico to Alaska, Maine to Washington, and a few places in Canada… and even into the oceans. Now I’m writing about my real-life experiences while weaving in some fiction so I don’t get sued.

Heavily influenced and intrigued by reading Louis L’Amour growing up, I’ve held dozens of jobs in numerous career fields—on purpose. I’ve held top positions and won numerous awards in a variety of fields over the years as I take pride in my work and have integrity. I’ve worked for years in management, sales, marketing, restaurants, retail, tourism, animal rescue and rehab.

I’m an author, artist, photographer, proofreader, editor, and traveler. I’ve also worked as a dispatcher in law enforcement, and as a bona fide cowgirl in Arizona. I began riding horses at age 4 and have decades working with horses in about every capacity. I’m an absolute animal lover, both wild and domestic.

In the support of others, I’ve been a volunteer and supporter for numerous charities for decades. While my main focus is on protecting all animals and the environment, I’ve been a longtime supporter with Operation Gratitude. (Give them a look… they’re fully legit! I’ve got over 10 years with them!) Giving back is important no matter who it is.

While not on social media, I’d still love and appreciate hearing (positive things) from you! Please send me a note via my website and brighten my day. And while you’re on my website, be sure to subscribe to my newsletter- Join the Family. Of course, online reviews are incredibly appreciated (and needed!) as well. If you like or love my stories, please leave a review telling me why. If you didn’t, you’re excused from class! 🙂

Happy trails,

Jordan

FEATURED: Morgan’s Landing by Linda Griffin

FEATURED: Morgan’s Landing by Linda Griffin

Heather was taking a math test when Mr. Scarlett, the vice principal, called her out in the hall to ask if she knew where Julie was. He was unusually stern.
“She has Phys Ed this period,” Heather said. Shouldn’t he know that?
“She’s not in class,” Mr. Scarlett said. “She wasn’t in Computer Applications first period, either. Your mother says she didn’t stay home sick.”
“No, she left before I did,” Heather said. She was mystified, and as the situation sank in, she experienced the first shudder of real fear. Julie liked school, and she would never cut classes. Their parents would kill them if they even thought of such a thing. They were not overly strict, but they were firm in their expectations that their daughters would always do the right thing.
She dug her cell phone, silenced during class, out of her purse, and dialed her sister’s number. It rang four times and went to voicemail. “It’s me,” she said. “Where are you? Call when you get this.”

I knew I wanted to be a “book maker” as soon as I learned to read and wrote my first story at the age of six. My passion for the printed word also led me to a career with the San Diego Public Library. I retired to spend more time on my writing and have had stories published in numerous literary journals Morgan’s Landing is my tenth book from The Wild Rose Press. In addition to the three R’s–reading, writing, and research–I enjoy travel, movies, Scrabble, and visiting museums and art galleries.

Gary’s nine novels comprise three hit series featuring page-turning plots, flawed but lovable protagonists, and bad guys you love to hate.

His most recent works, the Valorie Dawes Thrillers, feature Valorie Dawes, a rookie policewoman with a #metoo past pursuing perpetrators of crimes against women in Clayton, CT. Val’s intuition, courage, and relentless hunger for justice sometimes pushes her close to–if not over–the line. Books in that series include A Woman of Valor (2019), In Search of Valor (2020), A Better Part of Valor (2021) and Mother of Valor (2022) follow Val’s path in pursuit of rapists, kidnappers, torturers, and sex traffckers. The fifth novel in that series, Under the Banner of Valor, is expected to release in Winter 2023/24.

Gary’s Lying Injustice Thrillers, his first series, is also his most decorated. Lying in Judgment, features Peter Robertson, a man serving on the jury of a murder trial–the murder that he committed. An Amazon.com best-selling legal thriller, Lying in Judgment selected as Bookworks.com “Book of the Week” for July 11-18, 2016, and was the feature novel on Literary Lightbox’s “Indie Spotlight” in February 2017. The sequel, Lying in Vengeance, released in September, 2017, explores the aftermath when a fellow juror blackmails him in hopes of forcing him to kill again–or be exposed for his first heinous crime.

Gary’s second novel, The Mountain Man’s Dog, came out in June 2016, kicking off the Mountain Man Mysteries series. Forester Lehigh Carter fears only two things: dogs and women. But when he rescues an injured dog on the highway and brings it into his ex-fiancee’s vet clinic, his fears collide, leading to an unwelcome deep dive into the worlds of romance, politics, pet ownership. The sequel, The Mountain Man’s Bride, was released Feb. 8, 2017. The third book in the series, The Mountain Man’s Badge, was released in June, 2018.

All of these mysteries are available in hardcover, paperback, ebook, and audiobook formats.

Gary’s plays have enjoyed critical acclaim and have enjoyed several productions in regional and community theaters. His writer’s reference, Write Better Right Now: A Dozen Mistakes Good Writers Make-And How to Fix Them, is available exclusively on Kindle.

A homebrewer and coffee roaster, Gary loves to ski, cook, and watch his beloved Red Sox and Patriots. He hopes to someday train his dogs to obey. And when that doesn’t work, he escapes to the Oregon coast with his sweetheart.
