Tell us about yourself.:
Tom McAuliffe is an award winning Author living on Florida’s Emerald Coast with his wife and cat. He’s a former Photojournalist with the US Navy’s Combat Camera Group and a graduate of the DOD’s Mass Communications program at Syracuse University. He is also a magazine Editor and Writer with more than 25 years of by-lines.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?:
Detroit during the 1960s… it was a time of Cars and Rock and Roll. As part of Woodstock Nation I embraced Authors like Hunter S Thompson, PJ O'Rourke and Tom Wolfe.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I like to write at night… outside.

1) Get started
2) Don;t listen to the Nay sayers
3) Never Stop
What is the best advice you have ever been given?
WRITE! Writers write and until you have put words on the page there is really nothing to talk about.

What’s your biggest weakness?
Repetition in my writing and procrastination
What is your favorite book of all time?
Catcher in the rye by Salinger
When you’re not writing, how do you like to spend your time?
Camping and hiking… But I write every day.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
I was in eighth grade and it was a book that was in the adult section in the library and didn't wanna let me check it out… But I eventually got it it was called I think… The cannibals and it was about Hollywood in the 1960s
What has inspired you and your writing style?
the 1960s
What are you working on now?
I am exploring the genre of historical fiction/nonfiction merging the two together… For example the book I'm working on now is called the lake and there's about a racial event in the 1960s… Some of it is factual. Some of it is fiction written to help illustrate the story.
What is your favorite method for promoting your work?
I really need to work on that… I often say that one must plan on spending, at least as much on promotion and advertising as one did on producing the book.
What’s next for you as a writer?
We are in discussions with a major film company to turn my book "Mr. Mulligan" into a major motion picture.
How well do you work under pressure?
As a magazine writer and editor for 25 years, I am very used to working on deadline.
How do you decide what tone to use with a particular piece of writing?
That's a great question… It depends on the subject matter. While I usually right by the seat of my pants, one thing I do do is an extensive outline that goes down to the personality of the characters involved what their habits are, what kind of clothes they wear, what kind of language, they use, etc. etc..
If you could share one thing with your fans, what would that be?
If you were in this for the money… Stop right now and go take a career course in computer science and programming. It's about the stories! And let the writing be its own reward…
