Right Side Of The Tracks by Laverty Sparks

Five families. One address. And a street where every heart is searching for a way home.

Thirty-something Macey Burris has ambitions of a makeup artist career in the vibrant lights of a major city. But currently those visions are overshadowed with sacrifices in central Illinois. She’s stuck in a rural city by a meager part-time job and her daughter’s high school education. Macey’s single life is held in check raising a sixteen-year-old all the while counting the days until she can finally enjoy independence, freedom, and inner peace. Add to that, her road to liberty shortens when a love interest comes along when she least expects it. Now she must courageously choose to stay her course or give in to salvation.

Supplementing the story is an eccentric landlord. He’s been served with a legal paternity issue which he clearly defies. Until he meets the son responsible for the suit. Then the opinionated and temperamental man softens, yet that doesn’t save him from his illegal pastime, which eventually lands him in jail.
Readers will also be engaged with four other broken characters highlighting the story. An assorted cast is individually trapped, lost in a prison of their own making or unsustainable circumstance. Separately, he or she has made promises to themselves with no quick fixes, revealing the hearts, minds, and struggles to be human in a flawed world. Collectively, each party struggles with a panorama of thwarted desire, desperation, hope, loss and ruin, all wanting a better life than what has been handed to them.

The story is a moving portrait of resilience and self-discovery while capturing the everyday hopes, heartbreaks, and triumphs of ordinary people striving for something better. A poignant and uplifting portrait of small-town life, love, and second chances perfect for fans of Elizabeth Berg and Robyn Carr.

About the Author
Laverty Sparks is the gal you want to tell your secrets to, she’s just that trustworthy. She’s the kind of woman the others have a hard time figuring out…she’s that mysterious. But she’s the sensitive best friend, lover, neighbor, sibling, daughter, aunt, cousin, etc. who sympathizes and empathizes. And she writes about it, and for those women who have an understanding of the range of emotions when dealing with intimacy. From her writing studio aptly named “That’s All She Wrote,” she’s published or had traditionally published nine books: five women’s fictions, one historical fiction, two short-story collections, and one erotic collection. Laverty lives in the Midwest with her husband who both like traveling, casino gambling, photography and embarking on political activism. Her motto remains: “When all the words have slipped away, nothing will remain.”

Featured Book: Completely Opposite by Nellie Holloday

Later, after the dishes are done and the house falls into that soft, sleepy hush, I step out onto the porch. The air smells like pine and a hint of grilled corn, and somewhere a coyote yips into the night before settling back into silence.
I sink into the porch swing, pulling my knees close, and stare out at the stars. They’re sharp and scattered tonight, like someone flung a handful of diamonds across black velvet.
Emma’s words from earlier echo in my head: “You can’t outrun something that’s already in your heart.”
I think about Maisie’s tearful eyes, the way Jack’s voice cracked just a little when he said don’t leave us, and how his hand brushed mine when he helped clear the table, quick, accidental, but enough to make something deep inside me ache.
I close my eyes, and in the silence, the truth settles heavy and sure.
I want to belong here, more than I should, more than I planned.
But wanting something this much only stirs the fear that surrounds me. And I can’t help wondering… am I strong enough to face it?
